Yes, I'm a little late to join the party, but you didn't think that I would miss out on the opportunity to once more recommend Sanderson to you all? His latest two books were published the 26th of January in the US, and on the 28th in Europe and I assume elsewhere. I've finished it for a while now, but simply didn't get round to writing a review.
Bands of Mourning is the third book in the second mistborn series featuring Wax and Wayne. This book has everything Shadows of Self still missed; and with that, I mostly mean: MORE STERIS! Seriously, this book gave me a new OTP: Wax and Steris. I was pretty much on their side in Shadows, but the first few pages of Bands just made me put them as my favourite pairing ever. They beat Lyra and Will, and that's something.
Bands is in many ways the best book in the new series. Alloy felt like a build-up, and initially I had assumed it was a standalone. Shadows really started the series, but none of those books were as impressive as Wayne. It has everything; massive character build for most characters, more Wayne, great moments between Wax and Steris, so much Cosmere stuff, a lot more information on what happened between the deaths of Elend and Vin and the rise of Wax, major plot twists, a great climactic story, and you know, general Sanderson awesomeness.
The book is very fast-paced, unlike the first Mistborn trilogy. I think the original books contain several months, at least, but these books? More like a few days. The pace is quick and fast, and especially with Wax being a lawman and all, you get some sort of CSI feeling; but not in a bad way. It's definitely the most original spin on the genre, with Wax, Wayne, Marasi, Steris, MeLaan solving quite big crimes and problems (because let's face it, even if you don't know what the Bands of Mourning are, that can't sound good can it?), with the occasional technical support from Ranette. If you read Bands, you will probably agree that a team-up with the original Mistborn crew would work out so well. If only that could ever happen....
If you did finish Bands, be sure to read Secret History as well. I'm not going to say anything because the book is filled with spoilers for the original trilogy and minor ones for Bands, but damn, that book is good. And surprising. And just, wow. I needed that to mend a certain scar on my heart.
